Edinburgh schools review - Balerno High School

School Balerno High School
Proposal Balerno High would be expanded and refurbished on its existing school site. We have carried out early feasibility work.
Capacity would increase from 850 to 1,200 pupils.

Pupils could move to the Currie High School building in August 2022 for two years while Balerno High is refurbished and expanded.

Pupils from Ratho Primary would no longer go to Balerno High but to the new West Edinburgh High when it opens in August 2022.

Pupils from the Cherrytrees area of Currie Primary School would go to Dean Park Primary and then to Balerno High from August 2019.

Pupils from the Kinleith Mill area of Currie Primary would go to Nether Currie Primary from August 2019 and then to Currie High.

The rest of the pupils from Currie Primary would go to Balerno High instead of Currie High once South West Edinburgh High opens in August 2022.

Pupils from Kirknewton Primary would continue to go to Balerno High.
Who is affected No current pupils of Balerno High would be affected.

Pupils in the Dean Park Primary and Kirknewton Primary catchment areas and pupils currently in P4 to P7 at Ratho Primary would continue to go to Balerno High when they reach S1.

Pupils currently in P4 to P7 at Currie Primary, excluding those in the Cherrytrees area, would continue to go to Currie High when they reach S1 and would move to South West Edinburgh High when it opens in 2022.

Pupils currently in P1 to P3 or in the nursery and living in the Currie Primary catchment area would go to Balerno High when they reach S1.

Pupils currently in P1 to P3 or in the nursery and living in the Ratho Primary catchment area would go to a new West Edinburgh High when they reach S1.

Pupils currently P6 and below and living in the Cherrytrees area of the Currie Primary catchment area would go to Balerno High when they reach S1.
Reasons for the proposal There is not enough space in Currie Primary so the Cherrytrees area would go to Dean Park Primary and then to Balerno High.

Feasibility work has shown that Balerno can be expanded to 1,200 pupils

Ratho Primary will be closer to the new West Edinburgh High than it is to Balerno High.

Without Ratho or Kirknewton Primary, Balerno High would become a very small school, even if there were more houses built in the area.
