Open Streets

Programme for 6 October

12 noon - 5pm

Events and exhibitions

We hope you enjoy the activities and exhibitions in our Open Streets. Look out for our Open Streets team in green high visibility vests. They can help you with any questions and will be happy to help you find your way around the area. All activities are free.

West High Street Zone

Time Activity
All day Just Eat Cycle Hire, from the courtyard, City Chambers 
12noon – 5pm History trail at Gladstone’s Land in the Lawnmarket  
12noon – 4pm Spokes Mobile Stall. Active travel information and maps for Edinburgh and the Lothians.
12noon – 3pm Edinburgh Urban Sketchers will be meeting at the top of Cockburn Street to sketch around the High Street area. Come along with a sketchbook and art materials. 
12.45pm – 1.05pm House of Jack street dance performance and taster session in Hunters Square.
1pm – 4pm Edinburgh All-ability Bike Centre works with young and old with disabilities and gives them taste of independent mobility. Come and find a bike that works for you. (to be confirmed)
2pm – 3pm Swing Dancing, led by Edinburgh Swing Dance Society. All welcome to join in!
2.30pm and 3.30pm Edinburgh Festival Voluntary Guided Walks, Free tours around Edinburgh's historic Old Town. Meet at the City Chambers. 
2.30pm and 3.30pm Taoist Tai Chi™ Display and Taster led by the Taoist Society of Great Britain. Free and all are welcome to join in the sessions.

East High Street Zone

Time Activity
12noon - 4.30pm Street Games led by the Open Streets Team including Connect 4, chess, badminton, and hop scotch.
12noon - 5pm  Literary Walking Tours starting from the Scottish Storytelling Centre, John Knox House. Explore Edinburgh's Netherbow area, pick up your self-guided tour from the Scottish Storytelling Centre 
3pm - 4pm Yoga sessions led by Edinburgh Community Yoga. There are four 15 minute sessions. Free and all welcome to try out yoga. Bring something comfortable to wear. 

Grassmarket Zone

Time Activity
12noon - 4.30pm E Bike Trials, Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative will be in Victoria Street and Grassmarket. Come and try an e-bike! 
12noon - 1pm Argentinian Tango, experience this wonderful dance from Buenos Aires. Dance display is in the west Grassmarket, outside Dance Base.

Canongate Zone

Time Activity
12pm - 4pm Just Eat Cycles, Edinburgh’s Cycle Hire Scheme will be at the Canongate with E-bikes to try.
12pm - 5pm Scottish Poetry Library. All welcome to visit and enjoy some quiet reading time. 
12pm - 4.30pm Street Play. Playing outside whatever the weather with Canongate Youth’s Play Rangers Team.
12.30pm - 4.30pm Knitting in the Garden at Dunbar Close - we will have a display, patterns, wool and needles, also experienced knitters on hand. This is open to all and we welcome people who want to join in with other handcrafts.
10am - 12.30pm

1.30pm - 3.30pm

Buildings of Old Edinburgh, join in a family art drop in session at the Museum of Edinburgh.
10am - 4pm Rebels be Dammed! The Town Guard at Museum of Edinburgh.
10am - 4pm The RSPB at the Museum of Edinburgh.
10am - 4pm A portrait of Edinburgh at the People’s Story Museum.

Breeze Women's Cycle Rides to Open Streets

11am - 12.30pm Breeze Ride starting in Bingham Park; we will use the Innocent Railway Path to head into the Open Streets area. Meet at Bingham Park.
12noon - 1.30pm Breeze Ride starting in Middle Meadow Walk and goes across the Meadows towards the Open Streets area. Meet at Middle Meadow Walk.

Quieter Spaces 
Canongate – Scottish Poetry Library
High Street and Lawnmarket – Lower Cockburn Street, Writers Museum.
