Where We Are
Located in the heart of Edinburgh by Waverley Station,
with six exhibition galleries, the City Art Centre is both
home to the City of Edinburgh’s outstanding collection
of Scottish art and one of the United Kingdom’s top
temporary exhibition spaces.
Since it opened in 1980, the City Art Centre has mounted
an extensive programme of temporary exhibitions ranging
from contemporary art to science fiction and rare
antiquities from ancient civilisations.
Permanent Collection
The city’s fine art collection consists of some four
thousand works of Scottish art: paintings, watercolours,
drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture and tapestries.
The collection reflects all of the significant influences and
movements in Scottish art, ranging from early portraiture
through the Glasgow Boys, the Edinburgh School and
the Colourists to contemporary Scottish artists including
Bellany, Blackadder, Davie, Paolozzi, Callum Innes and
Chad McCail.
Cafe and Shop
The City Art Centre’s Shop on the first floor stocks an
extensive range of posters, cards, books, crafts and
art-related items.
The licensed Gallery Cafe at the City Art Centre is a great
place to recharge the batteries, with a wide-ranging menu
of coffees, teas, freshly cooked dishes of the day, soups,
vegetarian food and home baking.
