Vision for Usher Hall future now set in stone
The City of Edinburgh Council has demonstrated its commitment to the future of the Usher Hall by providing the resources needed to make the Hall’s next stage of refurbishment possible.
This exciting news means plans to construct a contemporary glass wing and greatly improve facilities have now become a reality. The work has been scheduled to begin in Autumn 2005.
It is expected that the transformation will take around three years during which disruption will be kept to a minimum. This will allow the Hall to continue the diverse programme of concerts and events that has established it as one of the most exciting high profile venues in Edinburgh.
The first area of development is the new glass wing combining traditional and contemporary architecture to create a light, accessible box office and café, and become the hub of our activities. It will become our new 'front door' - a welcoming entrance to the Hall. The upper floors will create hospitality suites and valuable office space for staff.
Work will then move into the Hall, improving backstage facilities, adding new and improved dressing rooms, a state-of-the-art education room, new stairwells and lifts, upgraded toilet facilities and extensive cloakrooms.
A full schedule of the planned work will be made available in the New Year.
