City of Edinburgh Council
Edinburgh has a road safety record to be proud of. Here are some thoughts from Edinburgh residents:
68% of you think 20 mph speed limits with speed humps are
a good way of improving road safety in residential areas
(MORI Edinburgh Household Survey, Autumn 2005)
80% of residents living in completed 20mph zones feel that
the measures are beneficial to their area as the lower speeds
of traffic has made them feel safer.
In last three years, we’ve installed 38 residential
20mph zones plus 108 out of 149 schools now have full time
or part time 20mph zones
20mph zones in residential area are predicted to half the
accident rate and with the current average urban accident
cost being £52,000, the programme is expected to ‘pay’
for itself within 18 months
Edinburgh’s 20mph programme has been acknowledged
by UK Transport Minister, Alastair Darling, as contributing
to Edinburgh’s child safety record.
