Walking and Cycling Fast Facts

Edinburgh can be proud of its walking and cycling record. To maintain and improve on this record – investment and space is being allocated to these travelling methods to encourage more people to walk and cycle, look after our environment, our health and the future of our city.

Fast facts - walking

20% of Edinburgh residents walk to work (Census, 2001)
56% of students walk to school
There are 267 Pelican and 54 Toucan crossings in the city

Fast facts - cycling

5% of Edinburgh residents cycle to work (Census, 2001) but is increasing steadily
Cycling usage has doubled from 1981-1991 and again from 1991-2001
Cycling Scotland’s recent survey ranked Edinburgh second in Scotland (after Fife) in terms of quality of provision for cyclists. CEC has a walking strategy that is in consultation
13% regularly cycle for journeys around Edinburgh (MORI Survey 2005)
