Council Leader welcomes HS2 report findings

Councillor Andrew Burns reacts to the report, which considers options for improving high speed rail links to Scotland and the north of England.

Published today (Monday, 21 March), the HS2 Ltd report details broad options for upgraded and high speed railways to the north of England and Scotland, including proposals to reduce journey times between Edinburgh and London.

Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Burns, said: “We welcome the findings announced today, which signal a real drive toward faster, more reliable train services between England and Scotland. We already know that journey times are set to decrease over coming years, but proposals to reduce the journey between London to Edinburgh to three hours would provide a real boost to Scotland and Edinburgh’s economy.

“As Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh has a lot to gain from improved, sustainable transport infrastructure, but also has plenty to offer to those encouraged to travel here by HS2 in terms of tourism, culture and business. Today’s news is the latest step to providing greater connectivity between Edinburgh and the rest of the country, and I look forward to seeing the HS2 project develop to bring its benefits north of the border.”
