Universities set for cycle safety road shows

A series of road shows is set to give drivers and cyclists an insight into the every day challenges faced by cyclists.

Run by Streets Ahead, Road Safety in Edinburgh, and involving representatives from the City of Edinburgh Council, Police Scotland, Transport for Edinburgh, and Spokes, the events will focus on the safety issues for cyclists caused by driver blind spots, notably in large vehicles, as part of the Drive Safe, Cycle Safe campaign.

People will be able to get behind the wheel of a stationary bus or large vehicle to experience the limits to drivers’ views of the road and cyclists travelling alongside them.

The spring road shows will also feature free bike checks, bike security marking, safety demonstrations and cycling accessory giveaways.

Transport Convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “Cycle safety is incredibly important to us, and we wa to raise awareness of the visibility limits faced by drivers too.

“We want as many people as possible to feel the health, environmental and social benefits of cycling, which is why we are so keen to improve accessibility and security through awareness-raising like this.”

More than half of Edinburgh’s households own a bike, with an 11% increase in the number of trips made by bike between 2013 and 2014.

In 2012, the Council committed to increasing the percentage of its transport budget spent on cycling by 1% annually, with 9% allocated to cycling projects for 2016/17.

Amongst initiatives to encourage cycling are the forthcoming introduction of 20mph routes around Edinburgh, creating a more relaxed atmosphere for cyclists, and investment in the city’s network of cycle routes.

The Council also committed to fitting cycle safety technology to several of its refuse vehicles to reduce the likelihood of accidents and has plans to roll out the system to more vehicles.

Streets Ahead road shows will take place:

Tuesday 15 March, 11am to 2pm
Heriot Watt University
Meadow Road, at the access road to Leonard Horner Hall

Thursday 24 March, 11am to 2pm
Edinburgh University
Charles Street, Potterrow campus, by the Infomatics building
