Cllr Hinds hails soaring bus passenger numbers

Transport Convener Councillor Lesley Hinds today responded to the news that Lothian Buses' passenger numbers have hit their highest level for quarter of a century.

Cllr Hinds said of the news:

"Speaking as a regular passenger, I think Edinburgh is very fortunate to have such an excellent bus service. Judging by these figures, many other residents and visitors agree, and I’m delighted to see that. The continued success of Lothian Buses is good for all of us, not just those who frequently use its services, especially as we approach a new era in Edinburgh’s public transport. 2014 will be a very significant year for the capital and Lothian Buses, as part of Transport for Edinburgh, will be at the heart of it.

"It’s very encouraging to see these excellent passenger figures from Lothian Buses, which demonstrate the ever-increasing role public transport plays in getting residents and visitors from A to B in the Capital. With the tram coming in just a few months’ time, and Transport for Edinburgh now up and running, our goal is to create a truly integrated transport system for Edinburgh which makes it as easy as possible for people to get around the city for work and leisure, while helping reduce emissions and improving quality of life at the same time.

"One of the key outcomes of the Council’s new five-year Local Transport Strategy is to ensure that Edinburgh’s transport system is ‘part of a well planned, physically accessible, sustainable city that reduces dependency on car travel, with a public transport system, walking and cycling conditions to be proud of’. I think these passenger figures from Lothian Buses prove that we’ve already made great strides towards this goal, and I’m sure that the city will continue to build on this success."
