Pilot scheme helps older people to adapt their homes

The City of Edinburgh Council is working with the Scottish Government to promote a new pilot aimed at helping older people to live at home for longer.

Help to Adapt allows people over the age of 60 to fund alterations so that they can stay in the comfort of their own homes.

The scheme provides a personalised service which aims to deliver peace of mind for homeowners. It removes the stress of having to organise adaptations such as stair lifts or handrails and offers assistance to manage the process every step of the way.

The Scottish Government initiative will be delivered by Link Group Ltd and available across 12 local authority areas until 2017.

Councillor Ricky Henderson, Health, Social Care and Housing Convener, said: “The Council is delighted to support the Help to Adapt scheme, which plays an important role in helping older people to stay in their own home. It supports our aim to help people remain in comfortable and familiar surroundings for as long as it is safe to do so.”

Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Communities and Pensioners' Rights Alex Neil said: "This scheme is the first of its kind in the UK and supports the Scottish Government’s commitment to helping older people live independently in their own home for as long as possible.

"It will help people to plan ahead and remain in control of their own future needs."

Craig Sanderson, Chief Executive, Link Group Ltd said: "We are aware of the difficulties people face when they get older and that is why we are encouraging homeowners to make alterations to their property now, in order to stay safe and maintain their quality of life in their home.

"Help to Adapt provides advice and assistance to deliver adaptations such as handrails, ramps, stair lifts, improvements to kitchens and bathrooms.

"It also offers an alternative option for older people who have limited savings, don’t qualify or don’t want to wait for statutory assistance."
