Interim measures will be put in place to accommodate cyclists and drivers on George Street during this year’s Festival.

These will come into effect between Frederick Street and Castle Street this week to allow for a temporary event space run by Universal Arts outside the New Town Theatre throughout August.

Traffic management will continue as normal on the rest of the street.

Changes will mean the there will not be access to a two-way cycle lane on this part of George Street (between Frederick Street and Castle Street). As an alternative, a segregated cycle lane has been created for cyclists travelling eastbound on the south side of the street.

Those cycling westbound will be required to join normal traffic travelling in this direction. Cyclists may travel along this section 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The westbound carriageway will remain open to drivers during the week between 6am and 6.30pm from 5th to 31st August, though will close outwith working hours and at the weekend (between 6.30pm on Friday and 6am on Monday).

Signage will encourage HGVs and buses to use an alternative routes.

Transport Convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “Following approval by the Licensing Committee for Universal Arts to site their facility on George Street, the Council has been working to ensure cycle access along the block between Frederick Street and Castle Street. We now have in place an access for cyclists in both ways along this block 24 hours, seven days a week.

“This is all part of encouraging festival activity along George Street and into the New Town during this busy time of year, as well as accommodating people travelling along George Street.”
