Just the formula for drink drive campaign

Formula 1 stars are set to shine at a spectacular driving event in Edinburgh next week.

Three leading Formula 1 drivers are set to light up Princes Street Gardens on Thursday 4th December as part of a global campaign by JOHNNIE WALKER® to promote responsible drinking.

Former World Champion Mika Hakkinen will be joined by 2014 McLaren Mercedes F1 drivers Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen to give a free public driving spectacular in West Princes Street Gardens against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

The event will promote Join the Pact, the global JOHNNIE WALKER initiative which encourages people to pledge to never drink and drive. Imagery and footage of the event will be used around the world to promote Join the Pact and to communicate the strongest possible message this festive season to never drink and drink.

These drivers understand the importance of staying in control and will demonstrate their precision driving by providing rides in Edinburgh city centre to competition winners, media and special guests in a JOHNNIE WALKER branded Caparo T1 supercar and two McLaren MP4-650S sports cars.

Councillor Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh’s Festivals and Events Champion, said: “The sight and sound of three of the world’s top Formula 1 drivers circling a track in the middle of Princes Street Gardens is going to be spectacular. The event will be free for the public to enjoy.

“The Council is thrilled Diageo’s Join the Pact campaign is coming to Edinburgh. As the home of Hogmanay, we welcome thousands of people to celebrate in the city’s streets, and the safety of everyone who joins in is hugely important to us.  We are glad to support the initiative to pledge never to drink and drive.

“People joining Edinburgh’s Hogmanay will benefit directly from the campaign too, because in return for pledges that have already been given, Johnnie Walker is providing free Lothian Bus journeys home.”

 Get Home Safely

Earlier this year Mika Hakkinen – two-time F1 World Champion and JOHNNIE WALKER responsible drinking ambassador – attended The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles to promote Join the Pact. During that event 25,000 people joined the pact and pledged to never drink and drive.

In return for each of these 25,000 commitments JOHNNIE WALKER will give back a kilometre of free rides home for party-goers in Edinburgh this Hogmanay by partnering with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and Lothian Buses to provide a free bus service throughout the city on New Year’s Eve.

The event will take place in West Princes Street Gardens from 11.00am-1.30pm and is free to the public. Special free tickets will be available for the Ross Bandstand area and will promoted over the next week through a series of local initiatives.

To win a ride in a supercar with a JOHNNIE WALKER® Global Responsible Drinking Ambassador at the event members of the public can tweet #Gethomesafe to @JohnnieWalker. To Join the Pact to never drink and drive visit Join the Pact.

Globally, Join the Pact has already gathered commitments from more than 1 million people to never drink and drive and in September, JOHNNIE WALKER announced it was seeking to achieve five million personal pledges over the next four years.
