Cllr Cardownie on the Queen's Baton Relay

Councillor Steve Cardownie, Festivals and Events Champion at the City of Edinburgh Council, comments on the Queen's Baton Relay coming to Edinburgh on Saturday 14 June

"The relay will be a fantastic opportunity for people to take to the streets to show their support for our batonbearers and celebrate Edinburgh’s part to play in the Commonwealth Games.

"It is great that the Queen’s Baton will travel throughout the Capital and into the many communities that make this city so unique.

"As host of the 1970 and 1986 Games, and co-host of this year’s diving event at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, it is fitting that the baton will be brought home to Edinburgh - the only city in the world to welcome Commonwealth Games events for a third time.

"The School Run is going to be a standout event for families up and down the country to play their part in the historic return of the Queens Baton to Edinburgh. Signalling the start of the Commonwealth excitement, what better way for the City to welcome in the Games than by offering locals the chance to try their hand at 15 Commonwealth Games sports at the Tryathon where they can also meet a host of their favourite sporting stars.

"Edinburgh’s Evening Celebrations will be the culmination to a day of festivities for the pending arrival of the baton and will bring together some of the brightest and best music acts from the capital.

"It will also offer the chance to cheer on some of Team Scotland’s sporting stars ahead of their Commonwealth Games competitions. What better way to celebrate the day of the Queen’s Baton Relay in Edinburgh than a concert in the heart of the city against the spectacular backdrop of Princes Street Gardens and the Castle.

"I urge everyone to get into the spirit of the Games and join in the Edinburgh celebrations on Saturday 14 June. Let's hear you cheer Edinburgh!"
