Councillor Brock on Royal Commonwealth Pool refurbishment

Culture and Sport Leader Cllr Deidre Brock responds to a letter from a member of the public to the Edinburgh Evening News.

In reply to the letter from a reader on 2 August 2011, I sympathise with people's desire to see their much-loved Royal Commonwealth Pool back open again but I must ask for their continued patience as the building's major refurbishment moves on apace.

This is an extremely complex project which will transform the RCP - an A-listed building - into one of the best aquatics facilities in the UK. Working with such a historic building has presented considerable engineering challenges and the contractors GRAHAM Construction are to be congratulated on their hard work and dedication. They have set up an excellent website where you can find out about the stages of the refurbishment and view recent photographs taken on site.

I'm delighted to say that the project continues to progress very well and we are on course for it to reopen early in the new year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to enjoy an even better RCP whose future is guaranteed for many decades to come.

Not really convinced that this project isn't another trams disaster waiting to appear in the papers, is it on time? NO, is it on budget?, all i know about it is that i have been driving past the pool for more than 2 years now and there seems to be no change to the building and that the website that you direct us to gives very little information as to its progress with no photograpgs on the work done on the inside to date.

How about updating the website referred to? It still refers to a reopening date in Summer 2011 on the Edinburgh Council page and has no information on current progress.

Sorry but there are quite a few pictures on the site and it has been publiced that opening is due for Spring 2012. From the photos there does look like there is quite a bit of work to do but I think we have to stick in and support them.
