Edinburgh canal festival sets sail tomorrow

Edinburgh’s 200 year-old canal is set to be transformed into a waterside carnival as the fourth annual Edinburgh Canal Festival kicks-off this Saturday (30 June).

Funded by Scottish Canals and the City of Edinburgh Council, the event takes over the Lochrin Basin at the end of the canal with various activities on offer, including free boat trips, canoe taster sessions and the ever popular raft race.

The event begins at 12pm and runs throughout the day. Proceedings will be officially kicked-off by Councillor Gordon Munro, Edinburgh's Canal Champion.

He said: "The Union Canal running through Edinburgh really is a hidden gem, with many local people and tourists unaware of its existence. The free festival aims to make the canal more accessible to local communities and there really will be something for everyone even if they don't have a big budget. This is a great opportunity to get people on the water."

The event forms part of the Council's ongoing effort to promote the Edinburgh Canal Strategy which aims to focus development in and around the canal and support canal-focused activities.

The Edinburgh Canal Festival is organised by Re-Union Canal Boats and a number of organisations/community groups who operate in the area.
