Council to take part in Twitter 24

The City of Edinburgh Council is to take part in a national twitter event that aims to increase awareness of local government business and services through social media.

Twitter24 is run by the National Communications Group in Scotland and will kick-off at noon on Tuesday 18th September until noon the following day. A number of City of Edinburgh Council twitter accounts will be taking part tomorrow using the hashtags #mycouncil and #edin24.

A variety of activities are planned across the 24 hour period including a question and answer session with Council Leader Andrew Burns and a virtual bus tour of the city.

Last year the Council took part in the very first Twitter 24 event along with 29 other Scottish councils which offered a unique insight into the daily running of the country's local authorities.

Councillor Andrew Burns, Council Leader, said: "As the world goes increasingly digital, it's important the Council explores different ways to communicate with their residents. Twitter 24 is all about showing the public what we do day on a daily basis and also raising awareness of all our services available. As a keen 'Tweeter' myself I'm delighted that we're playing our part in this national event and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to follow this unique event as it unfolds online."

The accounts taking part this year include:

South West Neighbourhood Team: @southwest_team

North Neighbourhood Team: @north_team

South Neighbourhood Team: @south_team

East Neighbourhood Team: @east_team

West Neighbourhood Team: @west_team

The 'follow the bus' event will see @edintravel_live touring the city over both days to learn about local services, events and interviewing people along the way who work for the city. Day 1 will see the bus travel through the South, South West and City Centre and Leith areas of the city. On Day 2 the bus will go to the West, North and East areas.

The Planning service (@planningedin) will also be available to answer general planning enquiries from 2 - 5pm on 18th September and 9 - 12 noon on 19th September.

Council Leader Andrew Burns will be inviting questions from members of the public via @Edinburgh_CC from 6pm-7pm on Tuesday.
