Boon for Christmas trade with free city centre evening parking

Shops in Edinburgh city centre are being given a welcome boost at their busiest time of the year with parking charges to be waived on many streets from 5pm in the run-up to Christmas.

Thanks to a successful pilot project this summer, the Alive After Five initiative is set for a festive follow-up from 3 December until 5 January inclusive.

Transport Convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: "The Christmas shopping period is the busiest time of the year for retailers and we want to encourage facilities to remain open for longer to make the most of this.

"Alive after Five was implemented after a request from Marketing Edinburgh and city centre retailers and was a great success during the summer. We expect it to be just as popular with shoppers and traders during December and into early January.

"We know things have been challenging for city centre businesses what with the tram works and the economic climate. The Council and our partners Essential Edinburgh and Marketing Edinburgh are pleased to be able to work together on this initiative."

Councillors will consider a report on Alive after Five at their meeting on 22 November 2012.
