Late night festive shopping in Portobello

Shoppers in Portobello can expect a lot of sparkle as local businesses celebrate the start of the festive season by opening late on Thursday 29 November.

The Shopping Crawl has been organised to encourage locals to do their Christmas shopping in Portobello as well as encouraging more visitors to the area. A special map has been designed to help locals and visitors find shops and businesses more easily.

More than 20 shops and businesses will stay open until 8pm for the evening, timed to catch people as they return home from work. Sing in the City choir, performing at the Christmas tree on Portobello High Street at 6pm, will kick off the evening's festivities.

Lynn Aitken, owner of In-House Design in Portobello, said; "We have a real mix of businesses here. A number of the independent retailers in the area are experts in sourcing unique and individual Christmas gifts. Some that have been around for a good few years and others that have opened recently. The traders work hard to make sure we offer quality services and products for locals and visitors alike."

Cllr Frank Ross, Convener of the Economy Committee, said: "Portobello offers a fantastic range of gift ideas from vintage, antique, arts and crafts and also great places to eat to relax when you have finished your shopping. I am delighted we are helping to support this project as part of our overall initiative to help build stronger town centres across Edinburgh."
