Footfall continues to increase as Edinburgh bucks national trend

Cllr Frank Ross, Economy Convener, and John Donnelly, Chief Executive, Marketing Edinburgh, comment on an increase in footfall figures for February in Edinburgh on the same time the year before.

Cllr Ross said: “Despite recent media coverage about footfall in Scotland being down over 4 per cent in February from the same time last year, Edinburgh’s figures continue to buck the national trend and have increased by 1.5 per cent in February on the same time last year.

“The ‘This is Edinburgh’ campaign is specifically targeting those living in and around Edinburgh to remind them to come and enjoy the city centre. This is a great indication that Edinburgh is in a strong position already, although we hope the campaign will drive footfall up even higher.”

John Donnelly, said:  “Giving locals and people who live in easy reach of Edinburgh fresh reasons to come and enjoy the city centre is a primary objective for the This is Edinburgh campaign. This is already happening with new attractions, such as the extremely well-received ‘Field of Light’ installation in St Andrew Square which is stunning – and there are a number of new events to come, all designed to further encourage footfall in the city. From March and through April, there will be a range of pop-up fashion events across Edinburgh to showcase Style in the City, followed by beauty, film in the spring and a new food and drink event in September.”
