Community spirit in the air in Moredun

An initiative to make the Moredun area of the Capital cleaner, safer and greener has kicked off.

The Community Initiative Week, which runs until 7th April, was launched this week by the City of Edinburgh Council in partnership with Police Scotland and various partner agencies.

It aims to raise awareness of the services available to support residents in Moredun's six high rise blocks and surrounding streets, and residents will be encouraged to speak to the teams throughout the week to ask for advice or to speak out about any concerns they have.

The police, together with the local Community Safety Team, have already carried out over 350 public engagement visits in the area this week, and residents are invited to attend the following “drop-in” sessions:

• Thursday 4 April 10am to 2pm:
Police and Fire and Rescue Services will provide information on Driver and Pedestrian Safety and Fire prevention at Moredun library.

• Friday 5 April, 12pm to 2pm:
Police will provide cycle safety advice and bike marking at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

• Saturday 6 April, 10am to 4pm:
Police and Fire and Rescue Services will provide Crime Prevention information and Fire Safety Advice at Moredun library.

Councillor Cammy Day, the City’s Community Safety Leader, said: "Initiatives like this are a fine example of the Council and its partners listening and taking action on residents' concerns.

"We want to do everything we can to make the area cleaner, greener and safer for all, and we can only do that with the feedback of local people. I’d urge anyone needing more information or wanting to raise their views on everything from anti-social behaviour to welfare reform to get involved; our team will be on hand to help."

Inspector Alan Bowie, of Police Scotland, said: “The Moredun Community Initiative week brings together a range of local agencies who are all working together to enhance the quality of life for people in the local area.

“Throughout the week our officers will be on hand to provide advice and information on a range of issues, including crime prevention, personal and cycle safety.

“Working alongside our partners in City of Edinburgh Council and elsewhere, Police Scotland is committed to making the Moredun area a safer and more secure place for all.”
