Direct Debit delivers free council tax for city winners

Five Edinburgh households have won a year’s worth of free council tax following a prize draw that aimed to encourage more people to pay their council tax bills by direct debit.

All customers who paid their bills in this way were automatically entered into the prize draw – over 68 percent of the Capital’s residents.

The Council is hoping to increase the number of people paying by direct debit which would free up time spent by staff processing payments manually and save Council taxpayers money.

Councillor Bill Cook, the city’s Finance and Budget Vice-Convenor, said: “This is a great way to encourage people to pay their council tax bills through direct debit - congratulations to all the winners.

“By running such an incentive scheme, we hope that more people will recognise the benefits of paying their council tax in this way. The ease of direct debit payments is becoming ever more popular in this increasingly busy world and this benefits the Council too by freeing up resources that can be spent on frontline services instead.”

Adam Kisala, one of the winners who lives in the Crewe Toll area, said: “We were obviously very delight to find out that we've won one year of free council tax, especially that we had no idea you can get something like that just by paying direct debit.

“We are using direct debit just because it is easy and simple, once is set up you just have to remember to have enough money on the date and that's it. We've told our friends about it and some of them, which are not paying by direct debit yet are now convinced it is definitely worth it.”

Direct debit is currently the most popular method of council tax payment. Customers can use a mixture of payment methods and channels for different services, including cash, cheque, postal order, debit cards, standing orders and other electronic banking methods, such as online internet banking and touch tone telephone payments.   Specific services can also be paid by credit card.
