Last chance to become a community councillor!

Edinburgh residents who want to make a real difference to their local area are being encouraged to take up the final opportunity to join community councils.

The nomination period for places on all of the Capital's 42 community councils will end on Monday September 23. They provide an an ideal opportunity for the City of Edinburgh Council and local communities to work together, and give community-minded people the chance to have their say in what goes on locally.

The first councils were established in Edinburgh in 1980 in Merchiston and Longstone, and more than 500 people are now members.

They each receive a grant to cover running costs and training is available. They are represented on each of the city's 12 Neighbourhood Partnerships and work alongside elected members, representatives from NHS Lothian, Police Scotland, the voluntary sector and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

They can allocate grants to youth groups, environmental clean-ups and improvement projects.

Councillor Maureen Child, Convener of the Communities and Neighbourhood Committee, said: "I encourage anyone who really cares about what happens in their local area to come forward and support community councils. They are a fantastic way of making local authorities aware of the needs of local areas, and can really help to make changes for the better.

"Community Councils are an ideal way to help local areas keep thriving, to allow people from all backgrounds to meet and share ideas and to make change happen."

Calum Gubby, a member of Corstorphine Community Council, said: "As a younger member of the community council I really enjoy being involved. It’s a great way to find out what’s going on in the area and I’m keen to build links with other groups and organisations like the Youth Parliament."

Anyone aged 16 years or older and registered to vote can join. Nomination forms are available here. This year, nominations are also being welcomed for the new Southside Community Council.
