Our thoughts are with Paris

The Lord Provost writes to the Mayor of Paris following the outbreak of fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Edinburgh's Lord Provost Frank Ross has shared the city's sadness with his counterpart in Paris, Anne Hidalgo. He said:Lord Provost with chain

"On behalf of the city and people of Edinburgh, I wish to share our sorrow with Paris following the fire at Notre-Dame.

"True to the Auld Alliance as well as our European bonds, our cities share a long history and friendship and we continue to have much in common. Edinburgh, like Paris, is recognised internationally as a city of culture and we pride ourselves on our UNESCO World Heritage architecture. If St Paul’s Cathedral is to the people of London what the Notre-Dame is to the people of Paris, then so too is our Scott Monument Edinburgh’s equivalent of your Eiffel Tower.

"These monuments symbolise our cities and they are loved. Even Scotland’s history is written on the walls of Notre Dame - it is where Mary Queen of Scots was married. It is with this understanding and appreciation of the Cathedral’s deep importance to your city that we feel such an affinity with Parisians at this time.

"We wish to pass on our thoughts and our support, and to commend the heroic efforts of firefighters as they continue to save the main towers and structure of what will always be one of the world’s most beautiful and iconic Cathedrals."
