Council HQ awarded for encouraging cycling

The City of Edinburgh Council’s headquarters has been certified ‘cycle friendly’ by Cycling Scotland.

Waverley Court, where more than 2500 Council employees are based, was recognised as a Cycle Friendly Employer by the national body on Wednesday (10 April). Cllr Macinnes certificate

Transport and Environment Convener, Councillor Lesley Macinnes joined staff to receive a certificate acknowledging the Council’s efforts to encourage cycling as a healthy, sustainable and accessible way to travel to work.

Amongst practical steps taken to achieve this are the promotion of cycle parking and changing facilities, making staff cycle training available and offering a bicycle mileage allowance to staff.

As a result of the award Waverley Court will benefit from guidance, resources and one-to-one support from the Bike Station on behalf of Cycling Scotland to further increase cycling as a healthy and environmentally mode of transport.

Transport and Environment Convener, Councillor Lesley Macinnes, said: “I am delighted that Waverley Court has become the latest Council workplace to receive this award. I know how hard the team have worked to make cycling an easy and attractive option for travel to work here and this recognition is testament to that.

“As a Council we are committed to encouraging cycling as a healthy and environmentally-friendly transport choice across the city, so it makes sense that our offices share this ethos too.”

Kath Brough, Head of Behaviour Change at Cycling Scotland, said: “Cycling Scotland is very happy to have awarded the City of Edinburgh Council as a Cycle Friendly Employer. It’s really encouraging to see how the council has worked hard to promote cycling across its worksites, and great news that it will now be easier and more accessible for over 2,500 council staff to choose to cycle as a part of their daily journeys.”

The city’s North-West locality office at West Pilton Gardens was given Cycle Friendly status earlier this year while the North-East, South-West and South-East offices are in the process of applying for the award.

As part of the scheme ‘cycling champions’ have also been appointed across the Council, as well as the establishment of an active travel user group.
