Count down to Chinese New Year

The Lord Provost, Frank Ross, shares a message with the 1 in 6 people around the world who will be celebrating Chinese New Year.

Greetings from Scotland’s Capital!

On behalf of everyone in Edinburgh, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous start to the new year.

Wherever you are in the world, I hope that as we enter the Year of the Pig you have the opportunity to participate in the incredible traditions and celebrations of the Spring Festival.

In Edinburgh, we boast a growing Scots-Chinese community and this month, are proud to be hosting Scotland’s biggest ever Festival of the Chinese New Year.Lord Provost with chain

With twenty events for all ages in venues across the city, we see the new lunar year in Edinburgh as an opportunity for our own Chinese community to celebrate and for other residents to learn more about Chinese culture.

It is also an important opportunity for us to provide a warm welcome to visitors from China. Many of our local businesses will be gifting red envelopes to customers and famous city landmarks will be lit up red.

Edinburgh is proud to be held in regard as the UK’s most China Friendly destination and the second most visited UK city outside London. In October, the World Tourism Cities Federations ranked Edinburgh as one of the top 5 long haul destinations for Chinese tourists, thanks to our new direct flight to and from Beijing with Hainan Airlines.

I hope we can recreate some of the incredible celebrations which are taking part in China and many other parts of the globe, with our own special Scottish twist.

Our city has long and proud links with China going back over a century and we hope these links continue into the new year.

On behalf of us all - xin nian kuai le !

Frank Ross

Lord Provost of Edinburgh
