Dalry's darling: Rona Brown receives prestigious award from Lord Provost

The Sir William Y Darling Bequest for Good Citizenship for 2018/19 has been awarded to Rona Brown in recognition of her community work and volunteering.

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Frank Ross made the presentation on Thursday night during a reception held in the City Chambers.

The Award, which is made annually to a citizen or citizens who, in the opinion of the City of Edinburgh Council, “has or have done most for the City’s Honour and Welfare”, was instituted by the will of the late Sir William Y Darling, Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1941–1944.

In being nominated, Ms Brown was praised for her dedication to helping others in her local area, as a volunteer, as Chair of the Gorgie Dalry Community Council, and as a member and friend to those who attend the St Bride’s Community Centre.

Commenting on the award, the Lord Provost Frank Ross, said: “This is a well-deserved recognition and it is truly inspiring how much valuable time Rona has given to her community and to her causes.

“She is a real community champion, described as ‘central’ to the organisation of civic events in Gorgie and Dalry, and is a citizen who cares deeply for her community and her neighbours. The bequest is presented with gratitude and pride for what she has done for the area.”

Councillor Donald Wilson, who nominated Rona for the award, added: “Rona’s activity and support of the Gorgie Dalry area goes back several decades and shows no signs of abating, despite her retirement several years ago.

“Rona established a ‘Forget me Notes Project’ Community Choir for older people with dementia and memory loss and created the Westfield Gardens Residents’ Association, which enables green-fingered residents to socialise while helping the local area look its best. These are projects which really change peoples’ lives, and is he wasn’t busy enough, she readily participates in everything from litter pick-ups to community fairs and gala days. Her energy and motivation is an inspiration to all.”
