Leith chosen as new film studio site

Creative Scotland has announced plans to work with Forth Ports to turn an industrial site into the home of a new film studio.

Operators will be invited to submit bids for the site in a move which would turn Leith into a 'worldclass' base for film production, from blockbuster movies to locally produced TV.

Responding to today's news, City of Edinburgh Council Leader, Adam McVey, said: “This is an exciting deal which opens doors for a new film studio in Scotland.Adam Mcvey

“Edinburgh’s links to the film industry are already strong – thanks to our city’s film-friendly approach and annual international film festival – and Leith is awash with the kind of creative and tech talent the film industry needs.

“Such a facility would undoubtedly provide hundreds of new jobs, which would of course rise when filming takes place, and bring great economic benefits to the whole area.

“Filming in Edinburgh generated over £16m for the local economy last year alone and we know that 40% of visitors to the UK are attracted to places they have watched on TV and in the cinema - so it’s highly likely a new studio would boost Edinburgh’s ‘seen on screen’ appeal to tourists too.”
