Housing payment boost

Housing leader, Cllr Cammy Day, responds to today’s announcement by the Scottish Government to make additional funding available to local authorities for the purpose of ‘topping up’ their Discretionary Housing Payment budgets for this financial year...

I welcome the Scottish Government’s decision to allocate an additional £2.1m to Edinburgh, allowing us to top up the Council’s DHP fund for 2013/14.

This Council has already adopted a no eviction policy and established a joint working group to investigate how best to mitigate against the effects of the UK Government’s Welfare Reforms.

This additional money will allow us to work with those affected to provide more support, advice and any additional funding they may be entitled to.

We will be contacting all council tenants in due course but I would appeal to anyone else affected by the bedroom tax to get in touch with their local housing officer to find out how to claim.

It is important that tenants pay their rent, which this additional support will help them to do. Rental income is essential to maintain and upgrade the current housing stock, and to allow us to invest in new homes for the future.
