Funding available for budding artists in Edinburgh

Up-and-coming artists living in Edinburgh have just a few days left to apply for funding from a bursary programme run by the City of Edinburgh Council and Creative Scotland.

A variety of grants up to £1500 are available for artists/makers to establish themselves and their work through the Emerging Artists bursary scheme or the Visual Artists and Craft Makers Awards schemes. The organisations are calling on interested artists to apply before the deadline of Friday 11 October 2013.

Councillor Richard Lewis, the city’s Culture & Sport Convener, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for budding artists in Edinburgh to establish themselves on the city’s artistic scene and benefit from the support that both the Council and Creative Scotland can give them. Alongside the funding, we are offering a tailored programme with mentoring support that can help artists develop new skills and potentially new work.”

Stephen Palmer, Creative Scotland, said: “Developing artists is at the very heart of what we do and this scheme will not only provide financial support but also mentoring from experienced professionals in the industry.  For artists and makers who value peer support this programme is a valuable addition to the offer in Edinburgh and Creative Scotland is delighted to be supporting this programme.”

The Visual Artists Award and Craft Makers Award schemes

The Visual Artists Award and Craft Makers Award scheme offer grants to Edinburgh-based individual artists/makers towards the development of new work.

The Visual Artists Award Scheme aims to support visual arts practitioners working in the fields drawing, painting, sculpture, print making, photography, moving image and filmmaking.

The Craft Makers Award Scheme is aimed at craft practitioners who create contemporary work, in areas such as ceramics, jewellery and metalwork, furniture and wood, glass, textiles and basket-making.

Awards of between £500 and £1500 are available. Applicants should apply for the appropriate funds needed for their project and will not automatically be awarded the maximum grant available. The Awards Panel reserves the right to offer an amount different from that requested.

Emerging Artists - Bursary programme

The bursary programme will run as a pilot and support two successful applicants to develop and progress their creative practice over 12 months.

The programme will be tailored to the individual artist and will include mentoring which may lead to the development of skills/training, creation of new work, presenting and marketing work.

Successful applicants will be awarded £1,500 as a bursary and there is a further budget available for additional support that may be needed.

The application deadline for both schemes is Friday, 11 October 2013
