British Sign Language Consultation

Find out more about British Sign Language (BSL) consultation.

Do you use or know someone who uses

British sign language?

Are you a parent/carer of a deaf child?

Or are you a BSL/English interpreter?

The City of Edinburgh Council is developing our new British Sign Language (BSL) Plan 2018-24. We want to involve and consult you on the plan and its objectives. To do this, we are establishing a Reference Group to help co-produce the plan.

The first Reference Group meeting is being held on:

Wednesday 27 June between 6pm-7:30pm

At South Bridge Resource Centre, 6 Infirmary Street, Edinburgh

Interpreters are booked for the meeting. The group will hold a relaxed and friendly discussion. More events are planned throughout the Summer, we’ll update you in due course.

If you would like to be involved, please contact

A BSL version of this is available here.

The City of Edinburgh Council is developing a plan showing how British Sign Language (BSL) can be promoted and supported.

The plan will support people with British Sign Language as a first or preferred language to be fully involved in daily and public life as active and healthy citizens.

Members of the public have the opportunity to share their feedback on the draft plan.

A public event will take place at South Bridge Resource Centre, 6 Infirmary Street, Edinburgh on Wednesday 27 June between 6-7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

British Sign Language interpreters will be available. If anyone wishing to attend requires other support they should forward details to the email address below.

The Council is keen to hear the thoughts of 'BSL users' and their families on how best to ensure people with BSL as a first or preferred language have equal access to Council services and support.

The Plan is in line with the Scottish Government's British Sign Language (BSL) National Plan 2017-2023 and the BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 which requires public bodies in Scotland to publish plans every six years, showing how they will promote and support BSL.
