Council partnership provides more affordable homes in Edinburgh

Work has started on the £3.9m construction of 32 homes at Lanark Road West, Edinburgh which will be available for affordable rent by February 2013.

Link Group acquired the site in July 2011 and the properties, designed and built by Ogilvie, will meet Link design standards for affordable housing.

The 32 properties consist of one and two bedroom apartments with four ground floor flats specifically designed to meet the needs of a wheelchair user.

Housing Leader, City of Edinburgh Council, Councillor Paul Edie said: "I'm really pleased that work has begun on this new development in Lanark Road West as Edinburgh has an acute shortage of affordable homes. Our commitment to tackling this problem has been shown by this Council approving a record number - more than 1,500 - for construction this year. We will continue to work with Scottish Government and housing associations to secure the funding needed to build more affordable homes."

Link Group Chief Executive, Craig Sanderson, said: "The site (dormant for many years) presented exceptional challenges to bringing it back into good use. We are delighted to have been supported by the Scottish Government and The City of Edinburgh Council to build new, high quality homes at rents affordable to people on low or limited fixed incomes. We continue to liaise with the local community as the development takes shape."
