Film event to bring Wester Hailes' past to life

A specially-curated collection of archive footage will shed light on the rich history of Wester Hailes as part of a one-off screening next week.

‘Wester Hailes Library presents A Kind of Seeing’ will feature a hand-picked selection of films capturing Scotland’s industrial past as well as clips of Wester Hailes over the years.

The compilation draws from the archives of the National Library of Scotland and WHALE Arts Agency and was put together by producer and curator Shona Thomson, who will present the screening on Wednesday, 22 February along with a panel discussion.

Culture and Sport Convener, Councillor Richard Lewis, said: “Libraries truly are at the heart of our communities and this screening will enable the people who live here to get a real sense of the area’s heritage.

“Wester Hailes Library recently benefitted from the launch of a new film club so provides the perfect setting to enjoy this fascinating collection of footage.”

Event curator, Shona Thomson, said: “I’m really excited to be able to screen these films at the heart of the Wester Hailes community.  It’s been fascinating looking through the archives for films of the area. I’ve been able to unearth a few films not seen for many years including footage of community arts projects and the famous Wester Hailes Carnival.”

The event is one of a series of mixed media projects presented by Shona under the banner of A Kind of Seeing, focusing on shared heritage in collaboration with artists and communities.

Wednesday’s cinema experience follows the successful launch of Wester Hailes Library’s ‘Family-Friendly’ film club, made possible by Edinburgh Libraries’ participation in the Film Education in Libraries Project run by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC). The scheme provides new film screening equipment and training thanks to funding from Creative Scotland as part of their Film Strategy.

‘Wester Hailes Library presents A Kind of Seeing’ has also been supported by Film Hub Scotland’s Audience Development Programme, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network.

The event will take place at Wester Hailes Library at 6pm on Wednesday, 22 February. Tickets are free but should be booked in advance by phone on 0131 529 5667, by emailing westerhailes.library@edinburgh.gov.uk or in person at the library.
