10,000 free tickets for the St Andrew Square Ice Rink

Edinburgh’s Christmas and Standard Life, as new sponsors of the St Andrew Square Ice Rink, are gifting 10,000 free tickets to the ice rink to school children in Edinburgh.

Free tickets to take a spin around the ice rink in the stunning setting of St Andrew Square become available online tomorrow, Tuesday 11 October, from 10am at edinburghschristmas.com.

Through this new partnership, Standard Life will be supporting the community where it has operated since 1825 and celebrating its long association with the city. Standard Life’s heritage is closely linked to St Andrew Square, having had offices on the corner of the square and George Street for many years. Standard Life is also developing a new office building on the south side of the square which will open in 2017.

Those applying for free tickets online will also be invited to make a donation to Place2Be, the charity partner chosen by Standard Life’s employees in the UK. Place2Be is a national children’s mental health charity providing in-school support and expert training to improve the emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and school staff. The charity is currently working with nine schools in the Edinburgh area. Standard Life will also be gifting some of the tickets to Place2Be, its official charity partner until the end of 2017, and encouraging people to support their work.

The Christmas ice rink is always a popular draw for families, last year issuing over 61,000 tickets over the Christmas period. This year the UK’s only elliptical shaped rink will be as magical as ever with twinkly lights, food stalls and the Christmas nativity scene adding to the Christmas atmosphere.

Graeme McEwan, Chief Communications Officer, Standard Life, said “We’re delighted to be part of the Edinburgh Christmas festival this year and to be giving Edinburgh’s school children the opportunity to join in all the fun, right here on our doorstep. Our offices overlook St Andrew’s Square, so sponsoring the much loved Ice Rink is the perfect way for us to celebrate our heritage here in Edinburgh and to support our community.

“The free tickets are released at edinburghschristmas.com tomorrow morning, so get your special booking codes ready as they are sure to be popular.”

Councillor Richard Lewis, Edinburgh’s Festivals and Events Champion, said “Edinburgh at Christmas is a magical place to be and a trip to the ice rink in St Andrew Square is a fantastic way to get the family feeling festive. As the city’s largest employer, Standard Life’s sponsorship is hugely welcome and it is great to see them give this gift to the city. After all, Christmas is a time for charity and children and, thanks to this project 10,000 school pupils across the city are in store for an early Christmas present.”

Olivia Curno, Director of Fundraising, Place2Be, said “Place2Be is thrilled to be part of this much-loved celebration. With the kind donations of the people of Edinburgh, we can continue to support the mental health of children and young people in local schools, as well as across Scotland, England, and Wales – helping build their resilience for a brighter future. Being chosen by Standard Life employees as their charity partner has made all this possible and we are hugely grateful for their support.”

“Charlie Wood and Ed Bartlam, Edinburgh’s Christmas, said “We are delighted that Standard Life has come on board as partners and sponsors of Edinburgh’s Christmas. As one of Edinburgh’s largest employers their investment in the city and its communities is an important part of the cities ecology and support of the popular Ice Rink in St Andrew Square a perfect way to celebrate their roots in Edinburgh. 10,000 school children will have the opportunity to skate for free on the ice rink this year thanks to Standard Life’s support, which is a fantastic gift to the city’s families.”

The St Andrew Square ice rink, as part of Edinburgh's Christmas, will be open between 18 November 2016 and 7 January 2017.
