Carers Week: events in Edinburgh

Today (Monday 6 June) marks the start of Carers Week - an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges that carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

A range of events will be taking place across the city to celebrate the awareness week including a giant game of Hide and Seek and a day of helpful workshops called Caring in the City.

Carers' champion, Councillor Norman Work said: "This week is all about saying thanks to carers for their timeless and selfless work, and for providing an absolutely vital service to the community.

“Many do not think of themselves as carers, and often fail to access the services and advice which is available to them through the Council, charities and relevant organisations.

"It is vital that carers, who can be of any age, are looked after, as there is a risk that their health and wellbeing can also suffer because of the stress and pressure caused by their role. Our job is to “care for the carers” by making sure they access much-needed help and support, whether it’s financial advice or respite for them.”

Here are some of the events taking place this week:

Monday 6 June – 12 June: Edinburgh Young Carers Project Carers’ Week exhibition

This year for Carers Week Edinburgh Young Carers Project is creating a display in St Andrews Square Gardens for the whole week, focusing on young carers, their lives and their stories.

Tuesday 7 June: In Your Corner – Hide & Seek

In the spirit of identifying hidden Young Adult Carers, In Your Corner has organised a huge game of hide and seek across the City of Edinburgh. The idea of the game is to see how far participants can travel from a chosen location, staying within the City of Edinburgh boundaries and without paying for anything – whilst another team is in hot pursuit trying to track them down. Each team will be given a fundraising tin to see how much money they can raise, whilst attempting to evade capture!

Time: 10am – start from Cornerstone office, Canalside, Wester Hailes
£5 fee to participate (exclusions apply)

Thurs 9 June: Caring in the City @St Columbas

Carers often tell us that it is hard to know who to ask for support and where to find it. Our Caring in the City events give unpaid carers the opportunity to meet many of the organisations that provide support and services for carers and the people they support and ask all those questions!

Pop in for free refreshments or come along to one of our workshops being held throughout the day.

Time:10am – 4pm
St Columba’s Church Hall, 1 Johnston Terrace,  EH1 2PW

Thurs 9 June: Redhall Walled Garden carer day
