Boroughmuir win Young Consumers of the Year Edinburgh Final

A team from Boroughmuir High School has won the Edinburgh Final of the Young Consumers of the Year 2013/14 Competition.

Boroughmuir pupilsThey clinched victory after fighting off stiff competition from runners-up Portobello High School. Teams from Drummond High School and Tynecastle High School also took part in this year’s quiz finals.

The Boroughmuir team, who were runners-up in the UK Final last year, now qualify to compete in the Scottish Final, which will be held in spring 2014 at the Scottish Parliament.

Here they will battle against fellow Young Consumers from across the country for the chance to represent Scotland at the UK Final. The UK Final takes place in Harrogate in the first week of July 2014 and forms a central part of the annual Trading Standards Institute conference.

Capital schools have a proud track record in the competition with Boroughmuir High and Portobello High winning three out of the last eight UK titles.

The Young Consumers competition is open to pupils aged 15-17 and is now in its 29th year.

Teams entering the Young Consumers quiz competition are tested on a range of consumer-related topics, such as: Money & Credit; Food & Drink; Safety and Health, Environment & Social Issues, as well as Shopping Rights.

The aim of the competition is to make young people more aware of their responsibilities and rights as consumers and provide them with the essential life skills they will need when they leave school. The Young Consumers programme is delivered to participating Edinburgh schools by an Education Officer based in Local Community Planning.

Young Consumers supports the four capacities of education as highlighted in a Curriculum for Excellence and links well with subjects such as Economics, Modern Studies, Geography, Business Studies, Home Economics and Enterprise, filling a gap in the Scottish timetable covering Consumer Education.

Councillor Maureen Child, Convener of the Communities and Neighbourhoods Committee, said: “This is a great competition for making pupils aware of their rights and responsibilities as consumers, and is a valuable lesson in essential life skills. Well done to all those who took part.”

The contest was at the City Chambers on Tuesday 17 December 2013.

Pupils who participated in yesterday's Edinburgh Final all received prizes for their efforts, which included complimentary tickets kindly donated by sponsors.

This year's Edinburgh sponsors are Camera Obscura, Dynamic Earth, Natural Heritage Scotland, Murrayfield Ice Rink and Odeon Cinema.
