Air quality in Edinburgh

Local air quality management

Cars driving down the street

Like all local authorities, the City of Edinburgh Council has an important role in delivering the National Air Quality Strategy. We adhere to a national three year cycle for screening, assessing and managing local air quality, and publicly report on our progress. You can access these reports from the downloads panel on the right.

We screen levels of seven main air pollutants. If necessary we will make a detailed assessment for any pollutant that might go above acceptable levels, and may even declare an Air Quality Management Area, with a plan to reduce the level of those pollutant(s).

Currently we have three Air Quality Management Areas in Edinburgh: Central, St Johns Road and Great Junction Street. You can find the locations of these areas in the downloads on the right.

We have a Council Green Fleet Policy. This is one of the actions in our plan to reduce emissions. Others include working with bus and freight operators, promoting public transport, developing park and ride facilities and making traffic management improvements. You can view our Action Plan on the right.
