The Rock Trust - Supporting young people into work

Many of the young people who enter Rock Trust supported accommodation are in crisis, trying to make important decisions about their life, often in the midst of chaotic circumstances. The majority of them are keen to find employment and to break free from claiming benefits but are unable to make realistic and feasible choices. Initially a support worker helps the young person look at the issues in their life and identify short term achievable goals. Although every support plan differs in detail general headings include practical living skills, social skills and personal growth. Use of time and the introduction of an element of structure to a young person's life always feature in a support plan. Standard Life's Pathfinder Project gives the Rock Trust's young people the opportunity to earn a properwage, receive quality training and be part of an organisation offering excellent staff conditions - a real break! To date the trust has had two young people selected for Pathfinders. Their experience has shown that supported accommodation, in tandem with a supported work placement, enables young people to continue acquiring the skills needed to sustain their own tenancy. Support on the job is important for any young person, but it is essential for a vulnerable 16 to 21 years old that is new to the world of work.
