Birth Registrations

When should you register a birth?
You should register a birth within 21 days of the baby's birth.

Where can you register a birth?
You can register a birth at the registrars office for the district where the baby was born or for the district where the mother lives if that is in Scotland. In the City of Edinburgh Council area the offices are:

Who can register a birth?
If the parents are married to each other, the birth can be registered by the mother or father (please bring the marriage certificate if available.)

If the parents are not married to each other and the fathers name is to be entered in the register he must attend along with the mother to register the birth.

The birth can be registered by the mother alone but will not show the father's details unless he signs a statutory declaration in the presence of a Justice of the Peace.

What forms do I need?
You should complete an application for a birth certificate here. This should be sent to any of the above offices either by post or in person., Please ensure you enclose the statutory fee of £13.50.

What certificates are issued?
An abbreviated birth certificate is issued free of charge. This shows the baby's name, date and place of birth. A full certificate with the same information plus the parent's details is available for the statutory fee of £8.50

How can I obtain a certificate from previously registered birth entry
If a birth has previously been registered in the Edinburgh area you should complete an application for a birth certificate. This can be taken in person or sent by post to the office where the birth was registered. Please ensure you enclose the statutory fee of £13.50
