School Boards have been in existence since 1989 and have grown in strength over the years.

The main purpose of school boards is to promote contact between the school, parents of pupils in attendance at the school and the community.

School Boards are all about partnerships. Parents, school staff and co-opted members meet together to share ideas, discuss issues and look at new opportunities. Through the School Board, you can be much more involved in the way your son or daughter’s school is run.

The Head Teacher is not a member of the Board. He/she attends as an Adviser. The Director of Education (or a representative) and local Councillors can attend board meetings. School Board meetings are public meetings and therefore any member of the public is entitled to attend as an observer.

What do School Boards do?
Some areas which boards get involved in include:
  • Taking part in the appointment of senior promoted teaching staff and if boards wish, other staff appointments
  • Approving the Head Teacher’s proposals for buying books and materials
  • Nominating members to serve on Area Attendance Advisory Groups
  • Encouraging the formation of a PTA where none exists
  • The Head Teacher consults the Board on the School Development Plan, Hours of Opening, school dress, homework, discipline policy and curricular provision
  • Communicate with Parents

How can I get involved?
Each primary, secondary and special school establishes an Electoral Roll for School Board Elections. This is a list of the names of parents of children in attendance at the school. Every parent, provided they are on the Electoral Roll, is entitled to vote and to stand for election. The Electoral Roll is confidential and can be used only for school board election purposes.

If a parent wishes to stand as a candidate, he/she must complete a Nomination Form together with the name of the person proposing them.

If more parents stand than there are places available, a formal election by postal ballot is held.

The Education Department currently manages elections and provides detailed information at the time of elections.

A School Board consists of:

  • Parent Members: Elected by parents of pupils at the school
  • Staff Members: Elected by the teaching staff at the school
  • Co-opted Members: Chosen by the parent and staff members
