The City of Edinburgh Council provides Gaelic educational provision from nursery through to Higher Grade Gaelic in secondary school.

The Gaelic-Medium Unit at Tollcross Primary School caters for nursery and primary pupils from all over the city. The children are taught the full curriculum through the medium of Gaelic, and their achievements are nationally recognised whether or not Gaelic is the language of the home. Pupils from the Gaelic-Medium Unit consistently gain prizes in the National Mod in various categories.

Pupils can later continue Gaelic study at James Gillespie’s High School where Standard Grade and Higher Still courses in Gaelic are offered. The opportunity to study Higher Gaelic through distance learning is available at St Thomas of Aquin’s High School.

Gaelic Parent and Toddler Groups and Playgroups have been set up in various areas of the city. The Education Department is currently seeking ways of extending the current Gaelic provision, initially in Tollcross Primary School, to enable all pupils to gain insight into the Gaelic language and culture.
