Water Management Policy July 2000
Policy Statement
The City of Edinburgh Council will pursue efficiency in the management of water, by influencing water usage and water disposal, monitoring consumption, and ensuring staff awareness of water issues in all its buildings’.
Aims
- to reduce water consumption in Council buildings and in all new build or refurbished Council properties, thereby minimising expenditure on water bills and reducing unnecessary water loss;
- to promote the conservation of water amongst all Council employees;
- to liaise with and develop partnerships between Council Departments, other Councils and external agencies in the implementation of the policy.
Key objectives
- to liaise with East of Scotland Water to install water meters in Council buildings as indicated on the priority list;
- to install water saving devices in all departments and to include water saving devices as part of all building refurbishment and new build programmes;
- to investigate the potential to recycle grey water in buildings and reduce the amount of waste water entering the sewerage system;
- to co-ordinate and centralise water consumption information and costs for all Council departments;
- to monitor the implementation of the policy as part of the eco-efficiency exercise.
Implementation
The policy will be promoted and monitored by the Department of Corporate Services (Sustainable Development Unit).
