Edinburgh now has a unique opportunity to create a city waterfront of international stature. The Master Plan for Waterfront Granton provides both the vision and the development framework needed to realise this opportunity. It aims to establish Waterfront Granton as one of the world's great waterfronts for living, working, learning and leisure.
The sheer scale of Waterfront Granton is dramatic; at 140 hectares (345 acres) it is as large as Holyrood Park. The splendid setting overlooking the Firth of Forth can be exploited to turn this currently rundown, derelict and "hidden" corner of the City into a major attraction and destination.
The site itself is magnificent. Along nearly three kilometres of the water's edge, this terraced site looks out across the Firth and historic Granton Harbour to Fife, the North Sea and west to the splendid Forth Bridges.
Waterfront Granton is a place that will involve and benefit the existing communities of Granton and will attract investment in a full range of employment opportunities. Additionally, housing, leisure, cultural and community developments will supplement the mix.
The Master Plan is designed to:
Urban Form
The overall form of the Master Plan takes the form of a familiar urban grid and block structure. This pattern is intentionally irregular and inflected to fit with the topography of the site and landscape features: the Central park; the "cones" of green space on the plateau; the brae running east-west across the main fall in level between the plateau and the foreshore; the green belt edge; the coastline and the Harbour. A network of avenues, streets and footpaths binds the distinctive quarters of the Plan together and links these with neighbouring communities.
The active frontages of buildings are used to define the open spaces, the waterside, the public realm and the routes in a familiar and traditional urban model.
This framework is designed with other important objectives in mind, providing for:
Within this framework, Waterfront Granton will comprise four distinct and characteristic urban quarters:
