The regeneration of Waterfront Granton is an enormous and complex project, likely to take 15 years or more to complete. Work has already started with the construction of the Southern Access Route, land assembly and the beginnings of land reclamation. However, there are many difficulties to be addressed and uncertainties ahead. Although bold and defined in its block form, the specific content and sequence of development of the Master Plan remains flexible. Waterfront Granton is a place of opportunity, innovation and choice. While allowing for a logical and coherent sequence of development, the Master Plan does not rule out unforeseen opportunities.

The first step is to open up Waterfront Granton through development around the central park, linking the existing communities to the waterfront. Immediate community benefit can be obtained from where later phases ripple outwards towards the Green Belt and Granton Harbour.

To underpin the regeneration venture, the Master Plan has been prepared as Supplementary Planning Guidance so that it becomes part of the statutory planning process.
